Questions and Answers about tryouts
MYSA rules prohibit clubs from holding tryouts prior to 24 hours after the last MYSA State Tournament game (August 1st) and high school soccer starts August 11th. So this is the only time available to hold tryouts. The actual tryouts are scheduled for Friday, August 8th and Saturday, August 9th, but we ask that you keep Sunday, August 10th open, as well, in case the Friday or Saturday date is rained out.
It is strongly recommended that a player attend both tryout sessions.
If a player is unable to attend tryouts, the data at hand will be used to place the player on the appropriate team. This includes Spring 2008 ranking, Winter 2007 Select Academy evaluations and Fall 2007 rankings. Please contact Neil Cassidy, RYSA Director of Coaching, to discuss options if no data is available.
The Rochester Youth Soccer Association (RYSA) is pleased to offer Spring/Summer and Fall Traveling soccer programs under the administration of the Traveling Committee. We are affiliated with MYSA.

Uniform: Players must wear the RYSA Adidas Traveling Uniform. A new set of jerseys can be ordered with registration. We are currently looking for a new outlet to purchase the socks and shorts. Players must keep the same numbers each year. RYSA will take your wearable, outgrown jerseys and shorts to give to players requesting financial aid.
Birth Certificate: RYSA no longer needs a copy of each players birth certificate or a certificate issued by Immigration and Naturalization Service on file. However, parents or guardians should have one handy in case an issue arises.
Registered Adults: Any adult working with youth (Coaches and Team managers) needs to complete and have notarized a NEW Informed consent form and submit it to RYSA before the first practice of the MYSA "soccer" year. The MYSA soccer year starts September 1st and end August 30th. MYSA Informed Consent Form

Description: Summer Traveling League competitive teams start practice in early April, play league games from mid May through mid-July and may qualify to play in the MYSA State Championship at the end of July. Teams play league games against other MYSA teams, typically from southern MN and the south metro area.
Practice/Game Schedule: Teams typically practice twice a week (i.e. Mon/Wed, or Tue/Thurs), play league games on opposite week nights, and choose to play a few weekend tournaments throughout the season.
Team Formation: Players are placed on teams with youth of the same age and skill level. Tryouts are held in the 2nd weekend of August. Teams are formed using age, prior coaches evaluation, player commitment form, tryout score, player registration date as well as number of players registered. If a player didn't attend tryouts, they will be placed on a team using their previous coach input and playing experience. We may have to limit registration in some age groups due to availability of fields and coaches. Players will be notified of team placement by mid-December. RYSA will attempt to place all registered players on teams.
Coaches: Coaches are selected based on their soccer training and experience, and include qualified parent and non-parent coaches. U9-U12 players receive additional skill training from highly qualified trainers. Coaches must be register with MYSA and complete a notarized Informed Consent form every soccer season.
Late Fees: Registrations received after November 1 will be assessed a late fee and players will only be placed on a team if space is available.
Player requests to drop: Once registered, players requesting to drop prior to November 30, 2007 will receive a refund for fees paid at registration time less $20 and will be released by RYSA. Players requesting to drop prior to December 31, 2007 will receive a refund for fees paid at registration time less $50 and will be released by RYSA. Players requesting to drop after December 31, 2007 will receive no refund and will not be released unless MYSA rules require RYSA to release the player. Refer to the MYSA Bylaws to understand the MYSA release rules.
Age Group: Registration will be open for U9-U19 players (Birthdates: 8/1/88 - 7/31/99). See Mysa link for more information on birthyear.
RYSA would greatly appreciate it if everyone would register on-line – it reduces the administrative burden of entering the data into our database. You may complete a registration form and pay at tryouts. Please be aware that registering on-line or completing the paperwork prior to tryouts will speed up the registration process.
There is no tryout fee this year.
Tryout evaluators were reviewed and approved by the RYSA Director of Coaching, Neil Cassidy. No evaluator will be evaluating an age/gender group that they coach or in which a family member participates.
Yes, but parents must stay in the area immediately adjacent to the RYSA building. This practice is common at other clubs and in the Olympic Development Program (ODP).
RYSA is always working to improve our policies. With this in mind, a group of people met several times and put forth recommendations for an improvement in our tryout process. To see their recommendations, please click here
Traveling soccer is competitive and results oriented. Participation requires a major commitment from the player and the parents – much greater than Recreational soccer. This commitment includes the time necessary to attend practices, league games, and tournaments. Traveling means traveling; most away games will involve travel times in excess of one hour and most tournaments will be around The Cities or further. Seasonal play starts in May and runs through the League Championships in late July, so family vacation plans may be impacted. The financial commitment includes uniform fees, tournament fees, and other expenses identified by the team (please note that financial assistance is available, if needed). It is expected that players will arrive on time, with all required equipment, and be mentally and physically prepared to participate for all scheduled practices and games. The coach must be notified in a timely fashion when a player can not attend a scheduled team event due to a conflict (e.g., academic, religious, or illness). Every effort should be made to avoid conflicts and it is recommended that trips and vacations be scheduled after the first week in August. Players with additional soccer season activities (e.g., sports, jobs, clubs, lessons, or trips) that may seriously interfere with their ability to train and play with the team, should examine their ability to participate.
RYSA needs volunteers. Please consider volunteering to help Coach or assist with RYSA club activities by indicating interest on the application or emailing rysa@rysa.org .
RYSA needs financial contributions. We continue to add more and improve existing soccer fields, expand our programs, and purchase additional goals and soccer equipment. We provide financial assistance when requested to provide an opportunity for all children in Rochester and the surrounding areas to play soccer.
